Insurance for Laptops – A Necessity?

January 27th, 2009 Posted in Personal Property Insurance

Laptops are extremely versatile. They can be used in an inordinate amount of situations, and by the very nature of their versatility they can also succumb to becoming damaged accordingly. We are able to take our laptop computers almost anywhere we want nowadays; people often take their laptops abroad on holiday with them, but this is certainly something that would increase the risk of damage significantly.

Well, should people actually consider implementing laptop insurance, when they have home insurance running that actually provides you with appropriate laptop insurance cover? I would suggest yes, as the home cover often has with it an extremely high excess fee that you would need to pay should you have to make a claim. There are many laptop computer insurance providers around, so take some time to consider each one carefeully prior to the implementation of your policy.

As laptop prices are coming down year on year, claiming on your household insurance policy would enable you buy a new laptop, implementing specialist computer cover would certainly work out less cost overall. The monthly premiums are less, and indeed so is the excess fee should you have to claim.

So,what can be the risk to laptops. If you were to take your computer on holiday the first risk you would encounter would be of accidental damage. Simply transporting the computer to the airport is, in itself be a risk, so caution would be advised around packing the computer well and in an appropriate bag accordingly.

With the advent of modern technology, you are now able to listen to your favourite music or indeed watch all of your favourite films on laptop computers and many people do this whilst on the plane or train. But as you sip your drink, the risk of liquid damage to your laptop increases somewhat; indeed, spilling a drink over your new, shiny laptop would render it useless.

Laptop insurance specialist offer liquid damage as standard; however I would advise that you look at your policy carefully to begin with to make sure your laptop is indeed covered for liquid spills. Spilling a drink over your laptop is such a common occurrence, and many standard home insurance policies do not provide this protection.

So if you actually manage to get to your holiday resort and your laptop is intact, the next thing to worry about is the risk of accidental damage. Accidental damage could happen in many different ways; accidentally dropping it as you unpack your bags is a credible risk of damage. Similar to liquid damage, accidental damage is a real danger, and something that your laptop policy will cover.

So is it worth investing in a specialist laptop insurance cover? My advice is that if you have an expensive laptop, and you are a frequent traveller and need to take your laptop away, then it is something worth considering.  Look around online and see what deals are available and ascertain whether or not your home insurance policy offers the appropriate protection first.

There are an inordinate amount of insurance providers online that offer laptop insurance and indeed other insurance products such as camera insurance. Simply search any major search engine and you will find the specialist laptop insurance  accordingly
