Why might insurance cover for a camera be important to you?
The technological world
Today, many of us walk around laden down with gadgetry.
One can typically see people almost staggering along with a laptop over one shoulder, a camera strung around their neck and speaking into an iphone at the same time.
of course all of these gadgets cost you a great deal of money.
If any of them are stolen or destroyed by accident, then you’ll be experiencing some serious expense.
Gadget insurance
As the number, complexity, cost and indeed vulnerability of our gadgets has risen, so the insurance marketplace has been forced to respond by offering various forms of gadget insurance.
This includes cover for a camera – this is an item that a great many people own.
What does insurance for a camera offer?
The policies offered by insurance protection providers do, as you would expect, vary considerably.
When taking out insurance you might find that you have protection against such as:
· accidental destruction of your camera (this may generally , in some cases, also include protection against liquid damage – it’s worth checking);
· your camera ending up in someone else’s possession without your approval – also known as theft;
· breakdowns outside of the manufacturer’s warranty period.
For a typically modest extra fee, some companies may also include the same protection for specialist additional lenses.
You may also find that some companies may offer both:
- a fast replacement, which may be within 48 hours;
- global cover that means you’ll be able to get help wherever you are outside of the UK;
- protection for other equipment related to your camera perhaps for a small extra fee each month.
Requirements
Once again, individual insurance providers will typically have their own terms and conditions and, as with just about every type of insurance cover, it will be subject to policy limitations and exclusions.
You usually have to check the small print to be sure of any limitations.
If you’re unlucky enough to have it stolen, the policy conditions might usually oblige you to report it to the police (typically within 24 hours of the theft) and to obtain a crime number as evidence of the theft.
As is common with many forms of insurance, gadget and camera insurance may carry a mandatory excess (the amount you would have to pay towards the cost of any claim).
Prices
The cost of many forms of gadget insurance protection is typically surprisingly modest. It certainly may appear to be so when compared to the cost of replacing your camera itself!
It’s to be hoped that you never suffer any problems with your camera but if you do, having insurance for a camera might typically prove to be a wise investment.
